![]() While the P generation was composed of pure line plants, he knew that the F 1 generation was composed of half the genetic information from each plant in the P generation. Mendel pondered, “If one phenotype dominates over another, how can the recessive phenotype even exist in a population?.” This led him to conduct another controlled cross, this time between plants of the F 1 generation. White flowers are recessive to purple flowers in pea plants. In contrast, the phenotype that is masked is known as the recessive phenotype. For flower color, purple dominated over white, meaning if a pure-line, purple-flowered plant is mated with a pure-line, white-flowered plant, all of the resulting offspring have purple flowers. He called these expressed phenotypes dominant, meaning that if there is a mix of two pure lines this phenotype will be expressed. Rather, he found that one of the extreme traits appeared in a cross of different pure lines. Mendel’s results for all of his physical traits did not support the blended inheritance hypothesis. We will focus on his experiment with different flower colors: purple and white. The resulting offspring are the first filial (or F 1 ) generation. ![]() Mendel mated peas representing two extreme “pure line” phenotypes from the P generation. The P generation served as the starting point for his inheritance experiments He collectively called pure line plants the P generation, the parent generation. Mendel's Monohybrid Cross Creating pure linesįrom his controlled self-pollinations, Mendel germinated and grew the “pure line” seeds of plants with several different phenotypes: seed shape, seed color, pod shape, pod color, flower color and stem length. This prediction is supported in the fossil record. Lamarck argued that if this happened from generation to generation, we would see giraffe neck length increase through time. Furthermore, Lamarck suggested that the offspring of the giraffes that stretched their necks would inherit this acquired characteristic. He suggested that the giraffes that were able to stretch their necks the most would be more likely to survive and reproduce (He coined “survival of the fittest,” not Darwin). Lamarck suggested that these early giraffes stretched their necks out to reach leaves in trees during times of drought, individually acquiring a longer neck. Early (now extinct) ancestors of giraffes had considerably shorter necks than modern day giraffes. He used the fossil records of giraffes and their ancestors as the nexus of his argument. This hypothesis was championed by Jean Baptiste de Lamarck. For example if a tall man and a short woman have a child, this hypothesis predicts their child would have a height intermediate relative to her parents.Īnother (non-competing) hypothesis of inheritance was in vogue during Mendel’s lifetime: inheritance of acquired characteristics. The blended inheritance hypothesis suggests that physical traits (or phenotypes ) of offspring are an intermediate of the parents. During Mendel’s time, the most accepted hypothesis of inheritance of physical characteristics was blended inheritance. For example, you hear family and friends comment on how a child is a perfect mix of father and mother, or how a baby has her father’s nose and her mother’s lips. Humans have probably done this since the dawn of time. ![]() Mendel wasn’t the first person to theorize how traits are inherited from generation to generation. Pre-Mendelian Concepts on Inheritance Blended inheritance hypothesis From his experiments with peas, he was able to determine several basic principles of how traits were passed from parents to offspring. Gregor Mendel was an Austrian monk that devoted nearly as much of his life to understanding the nature of heredity as he did in his fraternal duties. ![]() ![]() The seal sunk into the stone, and he could almost feel the building trying to determine if his work was good enough for it to allow the change to happen. He took the soulstamp he had been working on for weeks, now finally finished, and pressed it to the cornerstone. He would restore this building, and hopefully with it at his disposal he could continue to restore the ruined parts of this city to their former glory. He pulled out his toolkit and set to work once again, carving into soulstone. He had explored as much of it as he could get to, and had asked the few remaining denizens of this area for as much detail as they could remember. It seemed as though during the 7 day war it had been destroyed by flying rubble from an explosion in the distance. He walked up to a ruined building he had been studying for several weeks. As far as Laonin could tell there was no central government to this city, and that meant there was no one keeping chaos in check, or rebuilding what had been lost here. Countless dead caused by power hungry people with no care for the common folk. Buildings had been left in rubble, people without homes. There was at least one hospital set up that he had seen, but the care that had been given to most residents of the Alleycity was lacking in his opinion. That isn't to say there weren't people out there trying to serve the greater good. Most of the people in this place seemed more concerned with trying to spike unsuspecting travelers with sweet delights, or trying to stop the people doing that, or creating strife between guilds. Of course when fights between powerful people happened, those around without power seemed to suffer even more. Running around waving magic circles in the air, or shining bright with some inner light, or getting into fights with other people. They went about their business, doing important things in important places with important people. There were of course many powerful people in this city. He passed ruined buildings, people huddled in corners, and others who rushed from place to place, either needing to be somewhere or needing to be away from somewhere else. A war which it still seemed to be recovering from. He hadn't been here long but for the time that he had, he had heard rumors of a great war which had happened in the past that threatened this entire place. He tried to mind his own business for the most part, as getting involved only seemed to end in death and despair. He had come across many people in this strange place, from the DA to TUBA to any other number of other Homeless. ![]() Since becoming both literally homeless and one of the Homeless, he had been looking for a suitable place to claim for his own. Let me know what you all think of this - I can't help but think that many of these prophecies can be linked with Kelsier too nicely given what we know since Secret History and Mistborn Era 2. As you can see, since the release of Secret History, there are a lot of these prophecies that match Kelsier very nicely. I have laid out the quotes below, and left some comments underneath some of them. Now I don't know whether this will mean he will take up the shards, as that isn't necessarily a pre-requisite of being the Hero of Ages as per the quotes, but that he is in someway destined to save the world. My theory essentially suggests that multiple people can fulfil the Hero of Ages prophecy - and that the next person to do so will be Kelsier in Era 3 or 4. We all know that Brandon loves pulling a fast one on us, hiding hints very early for much later pay-off. Since my re-read of the Mistborn books, including Secret History, I started getting a sneaky suspicion that the Hero of Ages prophecy doesn't necessarily solely have to apply to Sazed - I then recently came across a post where someone had laid out all the Hero of Ages prophecy quotes and I think this is worth a discussion. I had a quick look but couldn't see a post on this topic so wanted to make one.
